Glug Glug Glug

This certainly has been a busy week. The Gulf of Mexico is rapidly becoming a highly flammable oil slick, Nashville is largely underwater, and New York City was almost (not really) blowed up. I've been trying to find an authoritative explanation of what happened on the oil rig in the Gulf. The best explanation I've found is that the crew was in the process of capping off the well with a temporary cement cap and, in a combination rushing to complete the job, a possible mechanical failure, and perhaps just bad luck, a series of events combined to cause a massive explosion that took down the rig, killed 11 crew members and sending upwards of 250,000 gallons of oil spilling into the Gulf. Not an auspicious beginning.

New York City had yet another terrorist attempt. Yes, yet again, another incompetent would-be terrorist made a crappy bomb that failed to go off. New York, admirably, didn't seem to much care. James Fallows has an excellent piece at The Atlantic where he wonders whatIf the TSA Were Running New York? The point he makes is basically summed up by the following: terrorists succeed when people feel terror. You beat terrorists by, you know, not being afraid of everything. Harder than it sounds, to be sure. Just remember, America is the home of the Free and the Land of the Brave. Start acting like it.

I don't know much about what's going on in Nashville. But evidently it's underwater. That sucks.

In other news: I was down in Carmel last week hanging out with Scott while he was house and dog sitting. Seriously, visiting his parents place is like going to an exclusive resort. It's both fun and relaxing. And Katie (the dog) was a sweetheart.

In a couple of weeks I'll be heading up to Seattle for a few days. Not for any particular reason, just to visit Seattle peeps at the Seattle office, hopefully catch up with some various friends and stir up a raging party. Oh yes. It will be a day that will live in infamy.
