As I believe I've mentioned previously, I recently bought a kitchen island, a bookcase and a corner bathroom cabinet This has resulted in much increased counter top space in my kitchen, a place to alleviate the overflowing nature of my other bookcase and give me a place to store my bathroom towels.
I've been on a bit of a craigslist spree these past week or so and am now the proud owner of slightly used kitchen island, a gently used but otherwise quite sturdy bookcase, and a really rather nice corner-cabinet for my bathroom. In short, my apartment has undergone a rather radical transformation in about 10 days.
Not too much has been going on, though I feel compelled to comment on a few points. As I'm sure you've seen in the news, the CEO of Linden Lab has recently departed and the founder and former-CEO Philip Rosedale is coming back on board to man the helm, at least for the short term. I'm not compelled to spend a lot of time talking about it on a public forum, but I will say that I am optimistic that the company is making some intelligent decisions about what the focus and direction should be for the future of both Linden Lab and SecondLife.
The dust is starting to settle from the events of last week. I don't feel compelled to to go too deep into the details, but long story short, there were some rather large layoffs at work. I was not caught by them, but a number of my friends were not so fortunate. So, if you happen to work at an actively hiring company and are in need of some good developers shoot me an email. As for me, I am cautiously optimistic that while these changes are tough and sudden that they will, ultimately, prove to be good for the company.
So, my brother got a special rate on 23andMe testing for a genetic assay for only $99. It usually runs $400. Anyway, he shared his results with me and, since we're brothers much of his results apply to me.
Evidently, by some estimates, by 2015 roughly 4 in 10 US adults will be considered obese. Now, that's a whole lot of fat people walking around. Well, probably scooting around in motor assisted little vehicles. Beating Obesity is a recent feature article in the May '10 Atlantic and it gives a rather interesting and in depth perspective on the history of obesity in the US and the various ramifications of it and the difficulty combating it.
This certainly has been a busy week. The Gulf of Mexico is rapidly becoming a highly flammable oil slick, Nashville is largely underwater, and New York City was almost (not really) blowed up. I've been trying to find an authoritative explanation of what happened on the oil rig in the Gulf.
Yesterday was the Web All Hands meeting. Evidently we're going to do one every quarter. I have no real opinion on that, though it feels a bit too frequent for my taste. Yesterday afternoon/evening was the Web All Hands alcohol infused milling about. I took an hour off in the middle to meet up with my friend Shawna who was in San Francisco for the day. And I also bought socks. It was fun. Then she ran off to go to a concert and I went back to the milling about.
The ever-recurring topic of Zombies um... recurs. So, I recently installed Plants Vs. Zombies (PVC) on my iphone and it was totally worth the 2.99 or 1.99 or whatever I paid for it. The game is thus: hordes of zombies threaten your house, and all that stands between them and you is your trusty garden. So you plant your plants and the plants, in various ways, fend off the approaching horde. It is pretty damned fun.
In other iphone related news: I'm giving the Tweetdeck app a try, to see if I like more, less or differently to Twitterrific.
About a year ago I moved full time to using a Linux based desktop (Slackware 12.2). For the most part this has been relatively painless and has made my work a lot easier. But every once in awhile I run into some difficulties and today I felt compelled to solve a long standing problem; namely that my scanner didn't work. Well, my printer worked. But my scanner did not. This was irritating since they happen to be one and the same.
After doing some searches for "Brother MFC-7820N" on google and I did, eventually, figure out how to get everything up and running.
